You can get married in Skyrim on PS4, and no, you don’t need any mods to do it. The system is baked right into the base game. It’s a small but satisfying part of roleplaying, and the perks aren’t bad either.
The process is pretty straightforward, but there are a few quirks console players should know about
Starting the Marriage Quest
First, you’ll need to make your way to Riften and head to the Temple of Mara. Inside, look for Maramal; he’s either at the temple or at the Bee and Barb. Ask him about marriage in Skyrim, and he’ll give you a quick rundown.
After that, you’ll need to buy an Amulet of Mara from him (20 gold) and wear it. This is what lets eligible NPCs know you’re looking for a partner.
Talk to someone you’ve helped before; if they’re a potential spouse, they’ll say something new once the amulet is equipped. If they agree, the wedding happens the next day at the temple. Just show up on time.
Marriage Options
There are dozens of NPCs you can marry: fighters, shopkeepers, hunters, and housecarls. Some fan favorites include:
- Aela the Huntress: strong, loyal, and deadly
- Ysolda: Has her own house in Whiterun
- Vilkas: If you like the brooding sword type
- Mjoll the Lioness: essential and fearless
Gender doesn’t matter. You can marry anyone on the list, as long as they’re interested.
Life After Marriage
Once the ceremony’s done, you get to choose where to live, your house or theirs. If they don’t have a home, they’ll move into yours.
Married life comes with a few benefits:
- A small daily income (100 gold)
- A home-cooked meal that boosts health and stamina
- A passive XP bonus for sleeping next to your spouse
- Some spouses can become followers and fight with you
Console Tips
If something feels off, like the wedding doesn’t trigger or the spouse won’t follow, reload a save from before the ceremony. Console versions can be touchy, and you don’t have mods or commands to fall back on.
Marriage in Skyrim isn’t complex, but it adds flavor. Pick someone you like, not just the first NPC with new dialogue.
